The longest life expectancy of any other HVAC system: The average life expectancy of a geothermal system is 25 years, whereas conventional HVAC is only 13 to 15 years.
Less demand on the grid: For everyone one unit of electricity used, geothermal produces 4 units essentially for free, requiring less from the electric grid.
Highest efficiency rating: Geothermal has an efficiency rating of up to 500%. In comparison, the most efficient furnaces only go up to 98%.
Most environmentally friendly: Geothermal has an efficiency rating of up to 500%. In comparison, the most efficient furnaces only go up to 98%.

Peace of mind: Got allergies? Get geothermal. With geothermal, indoor air quality is greatly improved because there's no requirement for fossil fuels.

Increased home value: Studies show that homes with energy-efficient perks, like geothermal, sell for 40% more than expected.

Hot water assist: Geothermal doesn't waste. The system takes excess heat and transfers it to your hot water heater, lowering hot water costs by 25% to 40%.

Low maintenance: With fewer moving parts and mechanical components of the system kept indoors, geothermal is less maintenance than traditional HVAC.

How Geothermal Works

hm-vsvt-illustration

A geothermal system is primarily made up of three parts:

Ground Loop

The earth absorbs and stores almost half of the solar energy from the sun. Due to this, the temperature four to six feet underground is moderate all year long, no matter your geographic location, staying between 45°F - 70°F. The geothermal system uses this moderate temperature underground to transfer heat from your home to the earth (and vice versa) using a ground loop field buried in the yard. The loop field circulates a water-based solution through a series of pipes. A quality ground loop field installation is essential to the operation of the geothermal system.

Flow Center

That water-based solution in the ground loop is brought to the unit in the house or building through a flow center. The flow center is typically mounted on the side of the unit or near it in your mechanical room, attic, or basement. The movement of the fluid allows for heating or cooling to be dispersed throughout. Think of it as the connector between the underground and in-home pieces of the geothermal system.

Geothermal Heat Pump

The flow center transfers heat to the home from the ground loop field through the geothermal heat pump kept in your mechanical room, attic, or basement. The geothermal heat pump provides heating and cooling throughout the home through two methods: forced air and radiant. In Whisper Valley, all homes are equipped with forced air heating and cooling. A geothermal heat pump can take the excess heat available, particularly in cooling-dominant months, and use it to assist with hot water heating. So, you get heating, cooling, and hot water assistance out of one heat pump.
